What are habilitation services in Tempe, AZ?

Habilitation is a process where a person with special needs learns to develop skills with the help of a trained caregiver. Essentially, habilitation helps these individuals attain, keep, or improve skills and functioning for daily life. For example, some children with special needs may struggle to develop social, behavioral, or cognitive skills that are essential for daily life. Caregivers who provide habilitation services in Tempe, AZ work with the individual (and their parents/guardians) to develop an ongoing plan that is based on the individual’s current functioning and desired goals. The goal is to increase your loved one’s independence by helping with improving adaptive skills, communication, mobility, and independent living.

Difference Between Habilitation and Rehabilitation

If you are new to habilitation services, you might be wondering what the difference is between habilitation and rehabilitation. Habilitation is a process by which an individual starts developing skills they have not yet attained, such as motor skills, behavioral skills, or cognitive skills. For example, a child struggling with learning social behaviors may receive assistance from a caregiver to develop these skills through a series of activities.

On the other hand, rehabilitation is a process by which an individual regains a skill he or she previously had but may have lost due to an illness, injury, or the acquisition of a special need. For example, a person who breaks their leg may have to undergo therapy to re-learn how to walk. Essentially, the goal of rehabilitation is to help a person regain a lost skill, while habilitation helps a person develop a skill they never had.
