Introducing HCBS

If you aren’t yet familiar with these services, that’s ok! HCBS, or Home and Community-Based Services, are services that provide assistance to individuals with special needs. For example, these services can include getting assistance with bathing, eating, dressing, taking medications, and more. These services are provided by trained professionals and certified caretakers who are as experienced as they are compassionate. And as the name suggests, these services can take place either in the individual’s home or in a community-based setting. There are many types of HCBS available for all age ranges and ability levels.

Examples of HCBS Care

Every individual has different needs; as such, the HCBS you choose will likely fit your needs (as well as your loved one’s needs). The services your loved one receives may fall under human services or health services depending on the HCBS you choose. Human services typically support needs associated with daily living and may include senior centers, adult day care programs, transportation, home care, financial services, and personal services (such as eating, bathing, dressing, etc.). On the other hand, health services tend to involve personal care, nursing care, dietary management, and certain therapies (such as occupational, speech, and physical therapy). Depending on your loved one’s specific needs, HCBS can include a combination of both types of services. That’s why it’s important to examine your options and find the HCBS that best fits your loved one’s needs.

We understand it can be a daunting process to find a service that addresses all your needs. That’s why the team at On Angel’s Wings, Inc. was happy to put together this short article to help you understand the benefits of HCBS and the options available to you. Let’s get started with some of the benefits and challenges of home & community-based services (HCBS) in Phoenix.

Benefits of HCBS

As you look into home & community-based services, you should know that there are many wonderful benefits to these services. Here are just a few to consider as you begin your research.

  • Reliable, professional care. Your loved one will receive reliable, professional care from trained caregivers. In addition, your loved one will receive care that addresses their specific needs.
  • Cost-effective. In many cases, home & community-based services are less expensive than other day care or residential care programs. Be sure to ask about payment options available to you.
  • Familiar settings. The individual with special needs will receive care in familiar settings, either in their home or a welcoming community center. Either way, the individual will be in a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Family participation. One of the best parts about HCBS is that your loved one doesn’t have to go it alone! Some HCBS programs allow family members to be caregivers for the chosen individual. This may require some training, but your loved one may feel better knowing that you are there to help.
  • Rest and Rejuvenation. As the individual’s primary caregiver, you deserve some rest too! While your loved one is receiving the care they need, you can catch up on chores, socialize, or simply get the rest you need to feel recharged.

Challenges of HCBS

Home and community-based services offer a great way to give your loved one the care they need. Even so, there are a few challenges with these services that you should keep in mind as you research your options.

  • Resistance. If you have been the primary caregiver for your loved one for a long time, they may have some hesitation about letting a non-family member take care of them during the day. It can sometimes be difficult to convince your loved one of all the benefits of HCBS.

  • Access to providers. Providers may not always be available in the area you live. It may be difficult to find providers who can drive out to your location, or to find a community center that is close enough to drive to.
  • Limited services. Depending on your loved one’s specific needs, home and community-based services may not be able to properly address all of their requirements.
  • Lack of 24/7 care. Not all HCBS providers offer access to 24/7 care. If your loved one requires special medical attention, you may want to look into other resources.
