Habilitation is a process that is aimed at helping individuals with special needs attain, keep, or improve skills and functioning for daily life. For younger patients, habilitation services in Phoenix aim to help them develop motor skills that they have not yet accomplished. Habilitation services include individual support plans that are designed for each individual so that caregivers can work with them to achieve specific goals. Services are customized based on the individual’s needs and level of functioning, which our staff will work with you to define. The goal is to increase your loved one’s independence by helping with improving adaptive skills, communication, mobility, and independent living.
One of the most common questions we get asked is what the difference is between habilitation and rehabilitation. Habilitation involves developing skills that one has not yet attained. An example of habilitation may be helping a child with cerebral palsy learn how to sit. Another child may need speech therapy to learn how to pronounce certain sounds.
Rehabilitation, on the other hand, involves regaining skills, abilities, or knowledge that was lost or compromised due to illness, injury, or acquiring a disability. For example, someone who breaks their ankle may need help re-learning to walk and put weight on that ankle. The goal of rehabilitation is to help a person regain a lost skill.
Habilitation services in Phoenix use a variety of methods designed to maximize an individual’s abilities. Habilitation may include…
Additionally, habilitation services may include physical, occupational, and speech-language therapy. There are also a variety of treatments for pain management. There are many benefits to these services, including improved socialization skills, improved speech skills, and improved mobility skills for both children and adults. Habilitation can take place in a home or community setting, including our North Phoenix location. We will work with you to determine the best location for these services.
