When you are looking for attendant care services, it’s important that you and your loved one feel completely at ease with your attendant care worker. It is essential that your attendant care worker is respectful, trustworthy, honest, and caring. As you get to know your worker, make sure you feel comfortable with them
Your attendant care worker should…
Yes, family members can provide attendant care in Phoenix. However, they will need to become trained attendant care workers before they can assist you or your loved one. If you choose to have a family member or friend become your provider, we will train them to meet your specific needs.
Many families like to have relatives provide attendant care services. In many cases, families choose this option because it is convenient, and they trust relatives to care for their loved ones. Before appointing a caregiver from your family, be sure to talk to them about the importance of this task and what they should expect to do. Your family member may not be able to handle all the tasks required for keeping your loved one safe, so make sure you have a backup option if they cannot help you.
Even though family members can make great attendant care workers, nothing can compare to the experience of long-time attendants. For anyone new to the job, taking care of your loved one will be a demanding, albeit rewarding, job. If your chosen family member starts to get overwhelmed, it may be a good idea to contact an experienced attendant care worker. Experienced attendant care workers are trained to help members with different abilities. They also know what to do in case of an emergency situation. If your chosen family member does not feel comfortable in emergency situations, it may be best to look into an experienced attendant care worker to keep your loved one safe.
If for any reason your chosen caregiver is unable to provide the proper care or does not feel comfortable becoming an attendant care worker, we can work with you to match your loved one with a new provider. We spend time with you and your loved one to determine your needs and the scope of care required. From there, we pair you with a trained, qualified attendant care worker.
Taking care of someone with special needs is a huge responsibility. An attendant care worker must be trustworthy, reliable, and understanding. If you plan to ask a family member to become an attendant care worker, be sure to include them in discussions so they know exactly what they will be responsible for doing. Here are some tips for involving your family members in attendant care.
Your chosen provider may not be aware of all the work that goes into attendant care in Phoenix. Be sure they know the extent of your loved one’s condition or special needs. Give them an idea of what tasks they will be helping with, such as cleaning, grocery shopping, cooking, and the like. Avoid pressuring them to help, as this may force them to agree to something they cannot reasonably assist you with.
If your family member agrees to become a provider, be sure to keep open lines of communication with them. Communicate often and make sure they are able to handle all the responsibilities necessary to care for your loved one.
There are many families who choose relatives to help with attendant care. If you need extra support, seek out support groups online or in your local community. You may find additional resources or providers that may help you down the line.
When your family member agrees to be a provider, they will need a detailed schedule to follow. Make sure to list everything they will be responsible for when they provide care. Creating a schedule early on will help reduce some of the stress of this arrangement. Be sure to have a backup contact in case your provider cannot help with attendant care on certain days.
It’s important to be understanding about the level of care your chosen family caregiver will provide. Be open-minded about scheduling, and make sure to communicate your needs with your chosen provider. You may have to ask a few family members before you find someone who can be there to support your loved one in the way he or she needs. You may even find that no one in your family has enough time to devote to caring for your loved one. If that’s the case, be open-minded about searching for other providers outside of your family. There are countless certified attendant care providers in Phoenix that can help you.
And lastly, be open about your own feelings. You may feel that after taking care of your loved one for so long that you are the only one capable of providing the right level of care. But taking care of those with special needs can be demanding, and it is perfectly ok to take a break and rely on others for help. Communicate your feelings with your family or chosen provider so there is no tension among anyone.
