What is HCBS?

HCBS, or Home and Community-Based Services, are services designed to assist individuals with special needs. These special needs often include behavioral, physical, or developmental special needs. As the name suggests, these services can take place either in that individual’s home or in a community setting. Professional caretakers are trained to assist individuals of all ages and all ability levels. Oftentimes, these caretakers help individuals with a variety of daily activities, such as eating, getting dressed, and bathing. In some cases, HCBS are designed to allow individuals to stay in their homes rather than traveling to a care facility.

Types of HCBS Care

Depending on the HCBS you choose, the services may fall under health services or human services. Health services typically involve nursing care, personal care, dietary management, and therapies (such as occupational, speech, and physical). Human services support daily living and can include senior centers, adult daycare centers, personal care (such as bathing, grooming, eating, etc.), transportation, home care, and financial services. Sometimes, HCBS can include a combination of both types of services depending on your loved one’s specific needs. We encourage you to consult HCBS professionals to determine what services your loved one needs.

Learn More About Home & Community-Based Services (HCBS) in Arizona

For those unfamiliar with home & community-based services in Arizona, you might be here to learn more about your options and how to find the right fit for your loved one. That’s why the team at On Angel’s Wings, Inc. was happy to put together this short guide for understanding HCBS. To start, let’s look at some of the benefits and challenges of HCBS.

Benefits of HCBS

There are many wonderful benefits to HCBS that you should consider as you look into this resource. Here are just a few to keep in mind.

  • Cost-effective. In many cases, home & community-based services are less expensive than residential care or even some daycare programs.
  • Allows family members to participate. Some HCBS allow family members to become caregivers for the individual. Keep in mind that sometimes this requires some training.
  • Familiarity. The individual will be in a familiar environment—either their home or a local community center—where they will feel safe and comfortable.
  • Reliable care. Home & community-based services are led by trained and qualified care providers. Care is customized to your loved one’s individual needs.

Challenges of HCBS

Although HCBS are a great way to help your loved one get assistance with daily tasks, there are a few challenges to keep in mind.

  • Access to providers. Depending on where you live, it may be difficult to find providers that can drive out to your location.
  • Lack of 24/7 care. Not all home & community-based services offer 24/7 care, especially concerning medical care.
  • Limited services. Depending on your loved one’s needs, home & community-based services may not be able to adequately address all of your loved one’s requirements.
  • Resistance. Those needing care may not feel comfortable letting a non-family member take care of them throughout the day. It can be difficult to convince these individuals about all the benefits of HCBS.

Attendant Care

Attendant care provides physical assistance to adults and children with special needs. As part of our services, we assist individuals in maintaining safe and sanitary living conditions while providing personal care and assistance in activities of daily living.

Our caregivers provide assistance with the following activities:

  • Bathing and grooming
  • Personal hygiene
  • Eating and drinking
  • Using the restroom
  • Getting dressed
  • Light housekeeping
  • Medication reminders
  • Transportation
  • Running errands
  • Grocery shopping
  • Meal preparation

Respite Care

Respite care is designed to give you the break you need while providing quality care for your loved one. Although caring for an individual with special needs is an incredible gift, it can also get exhausting if you don’t take the time you need for yourself. Respite care allows your loved one to get the care they need while you catch up on rest, take care of chores, or meet up with friends and families.

Here are some of the many benefits of respite care.

  • Gives you a chance to recharge. Respite care gives caretakers a chance to rest and recharge. Remember, you must also take care of yourself in order to take care of your loved one.
  • Teaches independence. While your loved one is being cared for, they will also be taught important skills for living independently. We aim to help each member grow as an individual.
  • Gives your loved one the care they need. While you are catching up on rest or chores, you can rest assured that your loved one is getting exactly the care they need.

Habilitation

As part of our habilitation services, we provide outcome-based training to help each individual achieve personal goals outlined in their Individual Support Plan. This increases their independence and self-help skills while building self-esteem.

We often get asked what the difference is between habilitation and rehabilitation. Habilitation involves developing skills that one has not yet attained. An example of habilitation may be helping a child with cerebral palsy learn how to sit. Another child may need speech therapy to learn how to pronounce certain sounds. Rehabilitation, on the other hand, involves regaining skills, abilities, or knowledge that was lost or compromised due to illness, injury, or acquiring a disability.
